This is now the Peruvian Gastronomic Week and it is happening now in Kuala Lumpur. From 10th October to 16th October, Peruvian Gastronomic Week is a showcase of the best of Peruvian food and it is only available at Cesar’s at The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur.
It was unfortunate that I couldn’t review the Peruvian Gastronomic Week as early as possible as I was tied up with other reviews and also work commitments. However there are still a few more days so you still can book your seats for this rare opportunity to try out a feast of Peruvian food.
It has been a hectic month of October for me. So far I had review six MIGF 2012 menus in this past two weeks, Oktoberfest and also followed by a few more restaurant reviews. I never had such a great October for a long time.
I never been to Peru but I visited Latin America before. I was traveling in Argentina for a month in 2010 and I enjoyed the food and culture there. Peru is popular with Machu Picchu, one of the greatest places to visit in South America. On other hand, Peru is also popular with its food and the love for food.
For the Peruvian Gastronomic Week, Ritz Carlton KL specially flew three chefs from Peru. However, I managed to meet Chef Rafael Lopez-Aliaga during my visit and it was my first time dining in Cesar’s at Ritz Carlton Kuala Lumpur. They were flown in via Dutch carrier KLM, one of the best airlines to fly with to South America since Malaysia Airlines halted their Buenos Aires route some time ago.
The Cesar’s in Ritz Carlton KL offers a very comfortable and classy interior with soft lightings and beautiful setting. You can experience of the best hospitality there with waiters and waitresses making sure you are in good hands.
Peruvian Gastronomic Week is a Peruvian buffet style that comes with two complimentary cocktail of Pisco sour. The Pisco sour was a combination of Pisco liquor (grape brandy) as base with sugar cubes and fresh lime ice and topped with sour tea and egg white foam. The cocktail had a strong flavour but it had a sweet base with sour topping. I would love to have more than two.
If cocktail is not your forte, they served mocktail by the name of Chica. When I asked the waiter what was Chica, he explained it as simple as possible, he said it tasted like Ribena. It had the similarities but tasted better than Ribena.
Sun Dried Potato, Chicken and Peanut stew.
It was interesting to taste dish like Sun Dried Potato, Chicken and Peanut stew. Chicken was cut into cubes and the peanuts were soft and it was not as nutty as I thought.
Aji de Gallina
Aji de Gallina was the chicken with creamy yellow chilli sauce. This was one of my favourites of the night. The chicken cubes were cooked to softness and it was very creamy but had hints of the chilli sauce and it was not spicy at all. The peas were there to give an extra texture to the creamy dish.
Seco de Carne.
The beef stew with cilantro or also known as Seco de Carne. The beef was cooked to tenderness and it had gentle flavour of cilantro. You might realize that there were quite a number of dishes using stew method and also they loved to cook chicken too.
Fish with spicy seafood sauce
Fish with spicy seafood sauce was another darling. I noticed they put spicy in some of their dishes but they were not spicy at all. This was mouthful. It had clamps, prawns, shredded chicken and hints of chili. This was palatable.
After the main, we moved to the famous Peruvian ceviche. Ceviche is a seafood dish that is popular in South America and its origin is unknown. It was only at this time, I got the chance to savour the ceviche or else you need to take more than 20 hours of flight to taste them in Peru.
It wasn’t done yet. In fact, I didn’t forget about the desserts. They had some of the best Peruvian desserts with cranky flavours. Well some of them were Chirimoya, orange and meringue, Sweet milk pudding, Rice pudding, Lucama Crunch and many more.
Pecans, Dried Fruits served with Crispy Bread and Cheese
Pecans, Dried Fruits served with Crispy Bread and Cheese was my favourite. It was a great combination of flavours with different types of textures. I had a few of these.
Dining at Cesar’s for Peruvian Gastronomic Week was a learning curve for me. It was an adventure of Peruvian gastronomy that you might not want to miss. There were many other dishes that I didn’t manage to sample too so I was spoilt for choices.
